Frequently Asked Questions
What’s a mala?
Malas, also known as meditation beads or prayer beads, are a knotted string of 108 stone beads. At the end of each mala, there is a 109th “guru bead” and a tassel. Tassels are traditionally made from silk string or silk sari fabric. Malas were created in India over 3,000 years ago, with roots in Hinduism & Buddhism. What are malas used for?
Malas, in short, are a meditative tool. They are traditionally used to keep count while chanting, reciting, or mentally repeating a mantra during meditation. However, you are free to experience the power of the mala in whichever way your heart desires. Your intuition will likely guide you. Personally, when I find myself wandering from the present moment, I fondle my mala beads in hand - rolling them, stroking them, raveling & unraveling them. This simple act calms my mind & grounds me in the present moment by illuminating the beauty of my surroundings.
How do I care for my mala?
I encourage you to be mindful & intentional with your mala. Be gentle. Be conscientious. They are a sacred tool embedded with ancient wisdom, as opposed to a piece of everyday jewelry. When not worn on the skin, your mala may be stored in a place that feels special to you, such as an altar or meditation space. Do not rest your mala in a bathroom or soiled area. The stones in your mala are highly energetic & alive in their own way. It is not encouraged to allow many people to handle your mala, as it will absorb their energy. Therefor, it is important to routinely cleanse your mala.
How do I cleanse my mala?
Allow the cleansing of your mala to be a special ceremony; a moment for you to reset, recharge & realign your energy with your mala. There are an infinite number of ways to cleanse your mala; I encourage you to discover a ritual that feels right to you. You may bask your mala under the light of a full moon, float it through a cloud of sage smoke, or mist it with rose water. If you choose to cleanse your mala in a clean body of water, avoid wetting the tassel & do not use any soap or chemicals. Also, be sure to give your mala ample time & space to dry. Sunlight is always a wonderful option.
